I just finished watching the movie Friday Night Lights, the story of the Permian High School 1988 Football Team. The town of Odessa Texas is run down and the biggest thing in town seems to be the Team doing well. If the boys do well then its seen as their ticket out of town to fame, fortune and success and as a result the pressure of the whole town falls on the shoulders of the team. The movie is at times dark and heart wrenching and i swear i could almost feel the pain when a couple of players during the course of the movie are injured.
In a lot of ways its not unlike Varsity Blues which featured a similar setting and pressures on a different high school team, just with a tyranical coach thrown in.
Overall Friday Night Lights is definitely worth a look although for a non American Football fan i did wonder about the logic of a game that is so hard and destructive to the players that it appears to be on these types of movies. But then its in the eyes of the beholder i guess and also i expect proves why they don’t let girls play.
