After my recent post on boxing it might seem strange that i just finished watching Cinderella Man. Believe it or not it arrived in the mail from WebFlicks on the same day as the Mudine vs Green fight. Freaky but true, fate is again thumbing its nose at me i think.
The story tells the story of a down and out boxer by the name of Jim Braddock (Russell Crowe). He was once a good fighter but the combination of injury, luck and the great depression all combined to put him down almost for the count. A lucky chance gets him back into the ring to win a fight no one expected him to. With training and more fights he finds himself fighting for the world championship against an opponent who has killed two men in the past by the power of his punch.
Behind the boxing is the backstory of Jim and his wife Mae (Renee Zellweger) trying to raise three children in the great depression and lacking the money for electricty, milk or even food sometimes when Jim can’t get work on the docks. But throughout they display dignity, honor and love for each overcoming adversity.
If you enjoyed Rocky and Million Dollar Baby then your likely to enjoy Cinderella Man although it could be argued that its borrowed features from both.
