So as regular fans, readers, and stalkers (you decide where you belong) I’m a fan of comments. Its feedback and an indication that people have read and usually enjoyed a particlar post. And of course i am an attention whore. Actually its more the later really.
Of course as all bloggers know there are those out there that want to take advantage of comments for their own uses known as blog spammers. They pedal everything from drugs to stock tips and porn using spam bots to publish accross thousands of blogs at the same time. Its neither welcome nor wanted and most bloggers object most strongly to blog spam.
It seems that i’ve become popular with the blog spammers of late. Waking up this morning i was “thrilled” to discover that i had received a few comment spams, to be precise 688 of them. I use the Akismet anti spam plugin which stopped any of the comments posting to the blog but never the less annoying to be receiving. So i’ve taken it to the next level and so i’ve installed the Bad Behavior.
Bad Behavior is a set of PHP scripts which prevents spambots from accessing your site by analyzing their actual HTTP requests and comparing them to profiles from known spambots. It goes far beyond User-Agent and Referer, however. Bad Behavior is available for several PHP-based software packages, and also can be integrated in seconds into any PHP script.
Bad Behaviour is supposed to only work against bots so its unlikely that any of my human visitors. If anyone does have any problems please let me know.

Didn’t like BB much when I used it.. At the time Fern’s blog was getting hammered with spam. I tried it out and the first 30 or 40 spams got through. Spam Karma 2 and since then Akismet haven’t let anywhere near that many through total.
Checked over the config etc and it was fine. Maybe things have matured and whilst I’ve heard many good reports about it. I’m yet to be convinced to try it again.
BTW FWIW Live+Press now works with WP2.0 there’s a new version out 1.99 that apprently works with it. I haven’t used it but I mentioned it in one of my recent posts. having said that I’m much prefering LiveJournal Crossposter another plugin does the same thing seems far more efficient and a lot more actively developed. HTH.

Dan, i’ve become a fan as BB has been stopping all the spammers getting to the site and while Akismet was catching it, its never the less a nuisance having to check through whats got caught incase of the unlikely event a legitimate comment gets caught.
Live+Press rocks. I’m using WP 2.02 and Live+Press 1.5 which is working very well. Only issues i ever have is if there is a timeout during posting then it posts to this blog but not livejournal .
