Civil wars in my perception would have to be one of the worst kinds of conflict. They can pit brother against brother, countryman against countryman and serve only to tear a country apart just when its leaders most need to be able to talk to each other. Its sad and its dangerous, terrorising the population and destroying resources and lives.

East Timor, one of Australia’s nearest neighbours is in trouble, sliding into what appears to be a civil war. I’m proud of the fact that Australia has sent troops into East Timor to be joined by forces from other nations including New Zealand and Malaysia but its a sign of the deteroration of the situation that originally Australia was going to negotiate conditions prior to forces moving in but now there are already soldiers on the ground at the airport and probably the bulk of the force will have moved in before negotiations will have been concluded. Its likely to be a dangerous mission and while i hope there aren’t going to be any casualites, i worry that there may be.

Please take the time to think positive thoughts for those forces going in to help our neighbour, they are going into harms way and deserve support.
