Today i bought World In Conflict, a strategy war game based on the premise that unlike what really happened, the Berlin Wall never game down and the Soviet Union never disintergrated. Instead Russia and the USA slid into War in Europe and then the USSR invaded the continental USA.
I remember growing up in the 70s and 80s when the USSR was evil and the symbol of all that was bad about it, the Berlin Wall. Checkpoijnt Charlie was famous as the most well known crossing point in Berlin. People were dying trying to escape from East Germany. I remember the cautious excitement in the last days of East Germany and the images of the first bits of the Berlin Wall being demolished. It was an exciting time to be alive.
It was strange therefore to open the game package and included was a small plastic satchel with a pebble sized piece of concrete inside. One face is red, the rest looks like any old bit of concrete bt it really is a piece of history and I found myself reflecting on te whole history of what it meant and the history that it conveys.
