I watched one of my favourite movies the other night, The Shipping News and a friend suggested that i should read the novel as there is so much more in the story that doesn’t make it to the movie including characters and events that add to the story.
The idea of reading a book got me pondering that it has been a very long time indeed since i sat down and read a book. Sure i used to do it all the time and it wasn’t uncommon for me to read a 500 page novel from start to finish in a day and still have time left over to do other things. But that was then and now is a different story.
On reflection as to why it occurred to me that perhaps i have been socially engineered in some way or another and that i aided in that. I am as anyone knows a mad keen blogger keeping numerous blogs including three at present updated on a daily basis (or nearly so) and this is where the social engineering comes in. With blogging comes reading blogs and you become conditioned to reading for the most part short sharp entries about a particular topic and moving on to the next blog post on a different blog with a different subject. None of this sitting down and reading hundreds of pages to find out what happens!
So i am come to the conclusion that one day soon i am going to sit down and read a book. Not to buck the system or rebel against being engineered towards the quick fix of todays multimedia society but because once it was fun and i am sure that it is still fun!
